The Onfale, the VL Ring Crown, the Dioscuri, the Vuelta - these four pieces treat light as an atmospheric material rather than a tool. The light envelops, diffuses, and creates an atmosphere. These bedside lamps work particularly well in bedrooms with a strong decorative statement, where the nightstand is a composition in itself. Ideal use: evening, light reading, ambiance. If you read for less than two hours a night, one of these pieces will suit you perfectly.
The Eclisse (with integrated mechanical dimmer) and the Yanzi (precise and adjustable LED) are the two reading lamps in the selection. For use exceeding two hours per night, this is the only logical choice. Two non-negotiable technical criteria: a CRI greater than 90 for faithful color rendering, and a temperature between 2,700 K and 3,000 K to reduce eye strain. Artemide was founded in Milan in 1960 by Ernesto Gismondi. From the very first decade, the firm collaborated with the figures of Milanese design: Vico Magistretti designed the Eclisse in 1965 and the Dalù, Giancarlo Mattioli the Nesso in 1967—from which the Nessinoderives, Michele De Lucchi the Dioscuri, Luciano Vistosi the Onfale in 1978, and Neri&Hu the Yanzi in 2017. Several adopt the mushroomsilhouette that has become a hallmark of Italian design. The result: several Compasso d'Oro awards, pieces that have entered the MoMA, and a permanent presence in design museum collections. The Italian designer bedside lamp is inseparable from this Milanese lineage: formal rigor, noble materials, and industrial longevity. These pieces are not fashion items—they have been in catalogs for forty, fifty, or sixty years.
Louis Poulsen was founded in Copenhagen in 1874. The founding principle remains intact: to design light so that it never glares, accompanying without overwhelming. Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL Ring Crown in 1945—reissued by Louis Poulsen in 2019. It is the very definition of the Scandinavian designer bedside lamp: light quality above all, form serving function. Pour la lecture au lit, trois critères sont non négociables : un bras orientable ou une LED précise, un CRI supérieur à 90, et une température de couleur entre 2 700 K et 3 000 K.
