When it was first presented to the public as a prototype at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art (now Designmuseum Danmark) in 1928, the poetic nature of the piece was a resounding success.

Based on Poul Henningsen’s multi-shade principle, the glass crown has three additional levels inserted between the three main shades. The whole is made of very delicate, yet highly durable, Italian borosilicate glass. The various tiers of the shade are arranged by alternating transparent and frosted sections, so that the frosted sections cover the transparent ones below, in order to scatter the light more diffusely while maintaining glare-free downward lighting.

Furthermore, a glass dome strategically positioned at the top of the lamp prevents dust and similar debris from entering. During the development of the PH Septima, Poul Henningsen also conceived a metal version that never reached the production stage. This research was, however, put to use nearly thirty years later for the development of the PH Artichoke, designed specifically for the Langelinie Pavilion restaurant in Copenhagen. However, in the 1940s, production of the highly regarded PH Septima and many other lamps had to cease due to raw material shortages. In 2020, Louis Poulsen brought Poul Henningsen’s sophisticated seven-shade crown back to life.

Color

Shades: clear and sandblasted glass
Structure and canopy: satin-polished brass

Material

Shades: clear glass with sandblasted sections
Brackets: steel and metallized brass
Body and canopy: untreated satin-polished brass
Suspension: white textile cord and wire

Instructions

Bulb: 1 × LED E27 max 28W (not included)
Ingress protection: IP20
Electric shock protection: Class II

LED bulbs consume about 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, while offering a lifespan up to 25 times longer. Furthermore, they generate much less heat, thereby contributing to a safer and more energy-efficient environment.
